Gastrointestinal(GI) Health

What is the Gastrointestinal system, and why is it so important?

Your Digestive system is made up of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and your liver, pancreas, and gallbladder. The GI tract is a series of hollow organs that are connected to each other from your mouth to your anus. The organs that make up your GI tract, in the order that they are connected, include your mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.

This system is responsible for taking food and converting it into the energy your body needs to function. How effectively it is able to do its job can be determined by many factors including the quality of the food you eat, how much stress you live with, and how well you sleep.

In functional health care, it is believed that the root cause of many symptoms begins in the GI system.

Symptoms of dysfunction can include:
  • Nausea
  • Bloating
  • Acid reflux
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Fecal urgency
  • Nutrient deficiencies (low iron)
By improving the health of the GI system, we can see improvement in non-GI related symptoms such as:
  • Brain function
  • Cholesterol balance
  • Blood sugar regulation
  • Hormone regulation
  • Energy
  • Skin clarity
  • Mood
  • Attention
GI health can be affected by the following:
  • Dietary choices
  • Stress
  • Alcohol
  • Blood sugar
  • Hormones
  • autoimmune disorders
  • Surgeries or medical procedures
  • certain medications such as antibiotics, antacids, and NSAIDS
  • Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth(SIBO) or Small intestinal fungal overgrowth

Our approach will examine the health of your GI system through analysis of your symptoms, discussion of health goals, and public or private functional lab testing if indicated.
